Hi RuthK - Nice to hear from you, glad you are seeing good progress, really makes a difference doesnt it, plus it makes you keep it in even when you really want to just leave it out for a while. Sorry to hear you are having one of those weeks, but I totally know where you are coming from, I think it actually gets harder to stick with it, the closer you are to the end, as the movement slows down and you just want it done!

I always feel like I have a trout pout, my holiday snaps were also ruined when I forgot to take it out, but I just keep telling myself, I'm nearly there and all photos after this, I'll have a lovely straight smile, shame nothing can be done with the wrinkles round my eyes lol!!

I am also swaying towards the fixed wire retainer, I'm seeing my dentist next Wed, so hope to discuss in more detail then.

I'll keep you updated. :D

Thanks Jen, you're a star for providing so much positive advice on here - thanks from me! :-)

Ha ha yes I know, I hope I don't start wanting bloody botox next after I've sorted my teeth out!! You're dead right, one set of trouty holiday pics is nothing when the rest will be of smiles with lovely pegs!

Yes please keep us posted on your next chat with the dentist, hope all goes well...not long now! :-D

Hi All,

Well I had my 13 week check up yesterday and all is looking good. I had a little more filing done to allow the tooth to come forward and my dentist thinks it may only be another week or two until I am done!!!! :D

I am booked in next week for another check and poss filing if the tooth still hasnt got to the final position and then after that we will be discussing retainers and any finishing touches I might like.

I am so excited!!! :jump:

I hope you are all doing ok and seeing lots of progress with your inman aligner, believe me, it does go quicker than you think and is so worth it in the end.

Jen

JENWALTON01 Fabulous news!!!!!!!! :-D

Well done for sticking with it, gosh only a couple of weeks left that's great, well done you. Do you think you'll go for the fixed retainer? (Sorry to keep banging on about that!!!)

I saw my dentist this morning too and she was really shocked / pleased at how much my teeth have moved since my last appointment, so much so that I may only have 3 weeks left!!! I had planned for 16 weeks so if all goes to plan I could be brace - free 5 weeks early woo!

The time has flown!

Wow RuthK, thats great news, 5 weeks early is amazing!! You must be so excited.

I do think I will ask for a fixed retainer but I will see what the dentist suggests. I will also need a little bit of work on the tooth that has come forward just to even it out, as the bottom of the tooth is quite thin where it has been worn away over years of rubbing on the bottom set. He said he will probably do that with the same stuff used for fillings, but obviously the right shade to match my tooth, apparently it wont be noticable once done.

Seeing him again tomorrow, so I will update then :D

Hi All,

Just back from my appointment, all looking good. Had a little more filing(interproximal reduction) done to allow the tooth to get to its final position but he is 99% sure it will be there by this time next week. So plan is, I go next week, if all is in place he will de-activate the aligner, book me in asap for bonding to get the final touches done, then he will take a mould to make my plastic clear retainer, think they are called Essix retainers, he said these are usually ready about a week after the mould is sent off.

So if all goes to plan I will be done in a couple of weeks time :jump:

I completely forgot to ask about the fixed retainer, i.e. the wire that is fixed to the back of the teeth, but I have just been looking it up and it does have a few downsides, for example, its hard to floss with them, you have to use certain types of floss to be able to do it properly, also it may irritate or make the tongue sore which could mean you have to use dental wax, as you do with fixed braces to stop the metal rubbing. So I'm not too sure about it now, but I will ask next week and see what he thinks.

I'm very excited now, the end is in sight woohoo!!!

Hi,
I've almost finished wearing my Inman aligner and am at the stage where I have to pick the method of retention. My dentist has given me three options:
1) fixed / bonded wire at the back of my front teeth
2) essix retainer - to wear every night forever
3) fixed / bonded wire PLUS essix retainer

I am very confused as have read good / bad things about both. I am so excited to get rid of my braces that the Essix option seems good because I won't have to feel wires etc in my mouth anymore, but I'm worried I'll lose it / it might snap, and my teeth will go back to crookedsville.

Help/advice would be much appreciated! X  :-+

Hi RuthK,

I'm going for the Essix option as it looks comfortable and can hardly been seen, my dentist said I need to wear the Essix for a couple of months during the day too initially, until the teeth have properly set into their new place and then only has to be worn when you sleep. The fixed wire was not an option for me as my bite is very close and so he thinks my bottom set of teeth would catch against the wire when I close my mouth, also he said they can make it difficult to floss and also some people suffer with sore mouth, as they do with normal fixed metal braces. I know there is obviously a risk of losing the Essix retainer or breaking it, but I assume you could buy a new retainer if that ever occured, your dentist would be able to take another mould and order a new one for you I 'm sure.

I was swaying towards the fixed one myself, just because its there and then you dont have to worry about remembering to put it in every night etc, but as he didnt think it would be suitable for me, my decision was made for me, so it was easy.

I'm surprised by option 3, why would you need both?

I'm almost done now, I did have my bonding to finish and then my mould done for my Essix but when I got home I looked again and wasnt completely happy with the bonding, so the retainer was cancelled and I am just waiting for another available appointment to get the bonding finished up, then the retainer will be ordered and I'll be finished :D

Let me know what you decide to do re the retainer.

Cheers,
Jen

I'm finally done :D

I've had my moulds taken for my Essix retainer which I pick up next week and then I'm all finished.

I am so pleased with the results :jump:

Hi everyone

I'm on day 2, teeth feel sore at the moment but I'm going to wear as much as I can this weekend as not confident enough to wear at work just yet. I spend a lot of time on the phone so need to work on my speech.

I had the filing between my teeth done this was fine but I don't go back for 6 weeks now which feels like a long time.

Excited to be on my journey to straight teeth but also nervous and sore!

Nic

Thanks RuthK, I am really pleased. I picked up my retainer today, I love it, feels tight but then its supposed to, can hardly notice it at all when I smile and best of all, I can talk with it in. My dentist recommends 6-8 weeks constant wear(apart from eating/drinking) then I can go to just when I sleep. I am totally fine with that, in fact, I almost forgot I had it in a little while ago and went to drink a cup of tea with it in, so I will easily be able to manage 6-8 weeks wearing it all day, so comfortable compared to the aligner.

I'll keep popping in on hear to see how you are all doing. Good luck.x

Hi Nic06 - I promise you the soreness will stop, I took about a week to get used to wearing the aligner. Apparently the speech does improve too, I never noticed that but I had a biteplane on mine which was why I ended up not being able to talk properly the whole time. But others said without a biteplane, you should be able to talk ok after a week or two, may still have a bit of a lisp but nothing major.

6 weeks does seem like a long time between appointments, I had appointments every 2 weeks throughout my treatment, but all dentists are different.

It will be totally worth it when you complete your treatment, I have just finished and got my retainer today, I''m extremely pleased with the results and my only regret is not getting it done sooner. Initially it seemed like it was never gonna be done, then I started seeing movement and it all went so quickly after that. Just keep positive and think of the end goal.

Good luck!

Thanks for replying Jen! I have a bite plane too! I put my brace in today and I'm finding the more I wear it the easy speaking becomes. The soreness isn't so bad now :) I can't wait to start seeing results.

How are you finding the retainers are you going to get the fixed bar behind your teeth?

Hi Nic,

No I went for the Essix retainer in the end, because the fixed one would probably catch on my bottom teeth when I close my mouth, as I don't have a lot of room. The Essix one is great, I barely even know I have it in, you really can't feel it, especially compared to the inman aligner.

Glad your speaking is getting better, mine didnt improve at all lol, but I just stuck with it and it was totally worth it.

Which teeth are you aligning? Just wondering if similar to mine, as you also have a bite plane. I guess until you have posted, you're unable to see pics yet, once you do, you'll be able to see my before and after pics, so can see which tooth I had aligned.

Jen.x
