I had giggle about the metal taste as I thought the same thing when first got brace and now never have the taste of metal.

Enjoy your journey
Hi Ridingboots,

Right now I'm on day 5 and I have sores in my cheeks from where my lower brackets are rubbing. The biggest nuisance is however the bit blocks, I can't chew properly and my ortho says I need to wait for them to wear down... It's quite painful too as the bite block on one side is bigger so the force of my jaw closing is wearing down on that one tooth. No wonder it's sore!

Good to know the metallic taste goes away, it's still present for me at the moment! :yuck:

Trust me it it does improve :-* but some things will always be annoying and I am certain bite blocks are one thing that would be annoying, just like the palate expander I have. But the good thing with both is they are temporary.

As for the metallic taste it should be gone soon and I highly recommend rinsing mouth with salt water that seemed to help me the most for rubs and any sores in mouth

I just got my braces on 06-Aug and I am finding it very difficult to eat since only my front teeth touch and the back molars (which are a dental splint). Luckily no metallic taste, I guess!

Orchid, pics are coming at the weekend - I've had quite a lot of difficulty getting used to all this stuff in my mouth and haven't felt able to pop a camera in there - haha.

The metallic taste has improved hugely, except first thing in the morning when I wake up which I guess is to be expected.

Also the pain in my molars with the bite blocks is much less, and I can pretty much eat whatever I want now (though I'm steering clear of mega chewy things like squid!). I tend not to eat much when I'm away from home and my waterpik though since cleaning is such a pain. So my lunches at work are super boring, soup pretty much every day!

This is how I feel about my waterpik - :-** Don't know what I'd do without it!

I found that when your teeth settle and the sensitivity eases that you'll get some confidence back with eating and it'll get easier. You need time to relearn what you can and can't do with all the hardware in your mouth, and I'm having to make a conscious effort to take smaller bites. I kept accidentally touching my front teeth together for the first week or so and it was very painful. Even that has settled now.

I haven't got a dental splint though so your situation may be slightly different. Hope it settles for you soon :)

I did something really dumb tonight - had a meal with turneric in...and my lovely clear/white ceramic brackets are now yellow. So pissed off with myself. I know not to eat stuff like that and somehow completely forgot.

Self-lighting brackets still have elastic ligatures right? Hoping I can get them changed at my next appointment which is 4 weeks away, argh!

I want my clear brackets back!!

Oops.. That's a mistake you won't be repeating! I did exactly the same last year, I went for a curry with a director of my organisation whilst travelling and once I was back at my hotel, was alarmed to see my clear power chain stained a bright yellow. I was due to be in Germany a few days later and very kindly, one of the staff came in on the day they were closed to replace it for me. I was very grateful for this so don't be afraid to ask for an appointment to get your elastics changed, I'm sure they will accommodate you. As another posted once wrote, "for me, stained elastics are an orthodontic emergency"

Thanks Neil, so glad I'm not the only one!! Hadn't quite realised how serious the staining would be. Not that I thought about it at all!
I'm telling myself it's not 'too' bad given I have linguals on the top and clear brackets on the bottom which are largely hidden but still - it's horrid.

I actually just called my ortho's office and they said they are fully booked at the moment because my ortho's on annual leave *sigh* will try again next week when he's back. Lesson learnt!!

These were my lovely NON-STAINED (Grr) brackets on my first day.

And below the very stained brackets post-turmeric disaster. Not sure why my actual teeth look yellow also especially compared to the uppers. Incidentally this photo also shows how badly misaligned my jaws are.

You have nice teeth to begin with so you'll have beautiful teeth after. Is having the lingual on top impeding your speech as having it on the bottom does?
