Stiff mouth and wonky bottom lip after sliding genioplasty?

Hello,

I know this is probably to do with swelling but I had my sliding genioplasty done 2 weeks ago and in the past week I have been unable to close my mouth properly - proper straining to do it and so end up with my mouth open looking a bit stupid. And the other thing is my usually full lips are thin and slightly crooked!! I am hoping it's to do with the swelling but it just seemed to have stiffened up a lot in the past week when the actual chin swelling peaked 3 days post-op then went down.

Has anyone else had this with their mouth/lips after a sliding genio? I am going on holiday next Saturday and don't want it to be this bad for my holiday snaps!

Two weeks isn't very long. It's likely you still have significant swelling, so don't judge the results yet.

Oh I'm not judging the results - I know it's normal with the swelling but admittedly the crookedness of it threw me

It's slightly bettet than it was last week but I guess I'll just have to accept it for my holiday. Oh well!

My lips were really swollen after BSSO/genio... especially the bottom lip. And the tissue around the lips was also swollen. Apparently the head has the densest network of blood vessels in the body, which is why swelling is such an issue for this kind of surgery.

Also, swelling is often asymmetrical. Which may explain some of what you're seeing.

Wish I could offer something more useful, but definitely give it time.

Does numbness/nerve damage as a result of sliding genioplasties ever disappear? Or is this damage permanent? It seems like everyone who's had an SG reports some degree of loss of feeling.

I had BSSO + genio the same day (well, night actually), so this is just one data point. I have some minor tightness/numbness above my chin and on part of my lower lip. I'd call it "feeling impaired", not numb -- I can feel everything when I shave my chin.

I had my 8-month post-op appointment with the surgeon today -- just got back an hour ago. He did a simple test on either side of my chin, to see how I perceived temperature (using cold cotton swabs). I felt the cold touches very distinctly, so he said I was likely to recover full sensitivity eventually. He did mention that it can take a year for this to happen, because nerves regenerate slowly.

Unfortunately I can't tell you how much was due to BSSO versus genio. The reality is that either procedure is very likely to damage or bruise a lot of tiny nerves.

Given where I am now, the remaining tightness/partial numbness is small potatoes compared to the overbite/overjet prior to surgery. I would definitely do it again, given the decision.

I had Sliding genioplasty a week ago.I have same issue with my bottom lip! It rolled in and got half size of my original lip! I feel tightness in the connection point with gum bc of sutures! I am stressful and so disappointed
My dr told me that it has more balance with my upper lip and got mad !! I am thinking to reverse the surgery partially hopefully it helps me to get my bottom lip and round face back instead of thin lip and long old face!
Can anyone help me to share his/ her experience?I am so confused and sad! can'd decide

It took me a little while to be able to hold my mouth closed, so I don't think what you're experiencing is abnormal.

I was 7 months post-op yesterday with similar results to Bullfighter. Some residual tightness and numbness, but it's not completely numb.

It's 35 days after genioplasty and I feel tightness in my bottom lip so I can't move it as freely as before, I can't easily keep my mouse in a position that it needs to have when we pronounce "O" or "WO" like "Shoe"!
It bother me , I feel my lip is stretched, I feel my bottom lip is stitched to my gum in upper point!
Also there is dome small bumps where was stitched that I can touch it with my thong now! It seems abnormal!
Does anyone have same experience and does it improve by time?
Also my front botom theeth and gum is completely numb after a month! is that normal!!?

That is exactly what I am experiencing. 100%. very stiff bottom lip and it became smaller after surgery just as if it was stitched too tight/low to the gums.
I am devastated because it feels so horrible and uncomfortable.
I can't move my lower jaw/lip as before and even talking looks weird. My doctor said I should put filler into the lower lip. whatta moron (sorry).
It was such an expensive procedure. I never had functional problems from any surgery.
I regret it. As you say it makes the face longer and I prefer round faces because they look younger.

Oh and I have the bumps too just as if there is still something inside my gums.
Did you have surgery in Switzerland just by coincidence?
I really want to find someone who can sort it out. It feels terrible

Please read my earlier posts. I am having the exact same problem. I feel for you. So horrible feeling. I don't know what to do about it

Strange feelings in the area where they operated (and even out into the cheeks) is completely normal for up to (and even exceeding) a year after surgery. Numbness on the front bottom teeth and gums 1 month after surgery is very common. Give it more time. You won't notice any difference on a day-to-day basis but in another 5 months to a year you should see a marked improvement.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm six months post double jaw and siding genio, at the point where the majority of swelling is gone, and I'm a bit upset at how things have turned out cosmetically.

Functionally, i can breathe much better, and the position of my tongue and bite is much improved.

BUT my face now looks super narrow and long, my chin is weirdly large, asymmetry appears worse in the cheek/jaw, and my lips are completely messed up.

The top lip is much smaller, basically rolled under and pinched together at the center. I've suddenly developed little smokers lines all along the top of the lip from it being in an unnatural position. I believe he made my lip smaller to ensure that my lips didn't completely cover my front teeth. The bottom lip gapes out a bit at the bottom now, which may be its own problem or due to the top lip. To top it off I have lip incompetence now, which I never had before.

I've been asking my surgeon about these things but kept getting the "wait and see how it is at six months" answer. In talks with friends basically everyone has alluded to me looking worse after this surgery. It's really hard, and I'm trying to hope for the best. Will be having a long talk with my surgeon soon.
