Introduction Post

#1 Post by Ironman32 »

I am a 32 year old man considering the option to get braces soon. My teeth are not really that bad, but are far from perfect. I want straighter teeth and a better smile. I was wondering what the likelihood of it changing my face profile or experiencing bone loss during moving. I read that can happen. I do not intend to have any extractions or anything overly complex so I will assume it probably won't apply to me. What are the best types of traditional braces to get? I want the most straight-forward option and I am not really looking into invisalign or lingual braces. Traditional metal braces are fine especially if they are the fastest and most economical route from point A to point B (fixed teeth). Are there different types of traditional metal braces? Damon? Heat-sensitive brackets? What are all these options?

Please feel free to comment and give me advice as this is my first post. Thank you.

I am 53 and have had my braces on for 8 weeks now. I have the fast braces system. They usually are on for up to 12 months. My estimated time is 7 months. I went with the metal brackets because they were a lot cheaper than the clear. Plus with fast braces they were at least half the price as traditional. Plus at my age I didn't want to be in braces for 2 or 3 years. Good luck to you!!

Hello
Welcome to the board.

I am in Damon self ligitating braces. Ceramic uptop metal bottom. I chose then because they could expand my upper arch a tad which is what I needed as I have a slight crossbite. They also don't have ligatures so my ceramic braces don't stain. But sometimes it will depend on ur preferred orthos choice as well.

Good luck!

The X-rays will show that/if it is safe for tooth movement. There are bigger words for this, but basically they will make sure your teeth/roots are ok for movement. At least, they should.

My orthodontist was very thorough in checking everything prior to being braced. I did have one extraction, but other than that my teeth were fairly straight prior to braces. I have the plain no frills metal brackets with ligatures and so far in less than 2 months have had major movement. I have been quite happy.

Good luck!

"fast-braces system" wow that sounds pretty cool, how do these go faster than other braces? 7 months as an estimated time frame sounds great! I would be happy to hear that at my next appointment after X-rays. I understand you when you tell me you dont want to be in braces for 2 to 3 years at your age. This also applies to me as I am not a teenager anymore, which is when people typically get braces. 7 or even 12 months seems very reasonable!

I also have a semi-narrow arch. I assume you mean the top palate, right? i wish my smile was a bit broader. If I could simutaneously expand my arch just a bit for y smile to better match my strong broad jaw that would be great. How long are you expecting to be in braces, total time?

Thats awesome you have seen results in just 2 months. What is the total time estimate they gave you? I will also get metal brackets I think, though ceramic also seem appealing if they are less noticeable.

Approx 18 months as I have a slight open bite that may take some time :(

They told me 12-15 months. I considered ceramic, but in the end I was going to just embrace it (pun intended)
I even have turquoise ligatures on at the moment. There is a progress pic in the braces stores section in my thread. It's pretty cool.

Would you say at this point you are satisfied to have done it?

A million times over, yes, I am satisfied I did it.

In both aspects ... starting the braces, and just getting the plain metal ones. I'm proud of them. It shows it's never too late to do something major for yourself. That being said, I reeeeeeeaaaallllly look forward to the day I get them off. LOL

Fastbraces are a triangular shaped bracket that moves the tooth and the root at the same time. If you Google fastbraces you will be able to research how they work and see if they are available in your area.
