Cosmetic Jaw Surgery OR Orthodontics?

#1 Post by lefortitude »

Hi forum and friends,

I had traditional extraction retraction ortho done when i was 12, one premolar extracted, and 4 wisdome tooth extractions when i was 21. Now im 24 and my jaw is narrow and recessed (maxilliomandibular junction) and my mid face is flat. my arches are so narrow, my tongue dosnt even fit in between them!

Anyways, Im considering cosmetic surgery to assess the facial imbalance in my lower and mid face, when i came accross some information on the impact orthodontics can have on facial bone structure.

Has anyone had any experience with functional orthodontics/orthotropics in expanding the dental arches and pulling the maxilliomandibular junction (upper and lower jaw) forward and up WITHOUT surgery as an adult?

Hi! My mouth issues aren't the same as yours, but I was given the option of jaw surgery and orthodontics, or no surgery and just orthodontics. My lower jaw didn't grow out as long as my upper jaw so it left me with an over bite and an over jet. I opted not to get surgery as my lower jaw is still well defined and I really don't want to change the shape or look of my face. My ortho will instead fix my bite and crowding, while "camouflaging" my overjet.

Have you spoken to an orthodontist yet?

I havent spoken to an ortho yet but I have multiple consultations with some orthodontists who specialize in craniofacial development. Hopefully I get some insight into my options from them. Im really noticing how small and underdeveloped my jaw is :(
