Hello all. I have been in traditional braces for 2 years to correct a class 2 div 2 malocclusion. For whatever reason, my bite is not willing to cooperate. I am still slightly class 2 on one side. I think it is close - but no matter what the ortho tries it just won't fully correct.
My ortho seems really keen to just take the braces off and I actually feel like I have been an inconvenience by sticking with it this long. Do any of you know what issues I may face if I throw in the towel? Jaw problems? Excessive wear on certain teeth? How big of an issue could these things be? My jaw/teeth will be healthier than if I never had treatment, right?
Of course I will also discuss this with my ortho at my next appointment but I would like your opinions as well. I kind of don't trust that I will get a straight answer from the ortho office as they seem to just want me done.
I think if your bite is pretty darn close, it may not be that detrimental in terms of excessive wear and jaw problems. But I'm not a dentist so I could be wrong.
Some people's malocculsion may never fully correct for all kinds of reasons or for no reasons at all. If the ortho has tried everything that could have been done but still nothing is happening, it may be time to call it a day. Being in braces longer isn't going to yield anymore benefits and could put you in danger of root resorption.
Hi There- I am in the same boat with being 95% done and can't quite get to the finish line. I ended up getting a 2nd opinion from two ortho's (one I had to pay; one was complimentary) to get some clarity with the issue.
I've come to accept that I'm not going to get everything on my wish list but I'll hopefully bump from the 95% to 97%.

I think that if your bite is just about there, once braces are off it will likely correct itself. My bite was way off (in many ways still is, as I'm 3/4 class II on one side, 1/2 class II on the other) when I removed my braces prematurely but it has now settled to it's initial, mostly comfortable, position that I've lived happily with for 40 years. My uneducated guess is that you'll be fine. As always, perfection is the worst enemy of good.

hey pscpinheiro, how long did it take for your bite to settle? My bite currently is worse than u.. half way between class 2 and class 3 on the left, and half way between class I and class II on the right.
It took several months. My molars were extruded a few mm and also slanted inward to the point they would only touch on the outer edges. A couple of months after removing my bite plane the (stupid) work that was done over 6 months lost. Then, after removing braces it took about 3 months without retention for my teeth to be almost where they were before braces. Even the lower canines rotated back to their initial position. Only thing that did not ,"relapse" was my wrongfully extracted premolar...

I am frustrated as the only reason I got braces was to correct my class 2 malocclusion. After having an incorrect bite for so many years, I was beginning to have jaw issues and have worn my teeth down prematurely. I was hoping correcting my bite would keep things from getting worse. I don't want my bite to go back to how it was. When I went for my initial consults, all the orthos I saw made me believe bite correction was completely possible.
Now, I know things can be unpredictable, particularly with adult patients, and I am sure my issues stem from things that have come up that the ortho didn't think he'd have to deal with. I guess it's frustrating. Feels like a complete waste of time and money...
Though maybe my bite is more stable/functional than I think. Who knows. I'll see what ortho says at the next appointment.
