Gum tissue question

#1 Post by H Rogers »

Please someone respond to this.... perhaps I'm just paranoid. I brush and floss faithfully 2-3 times a day and I use my waterpik twice a day. This past week it has just become so painful and my gums are turning red and becoming swollen. Should I be paranoid or is this a common occurence?

I've always brushed this way but perhaps its possible that I am brushing too hard. It doesn't hurt when I brush but when I floss is when my gums really become irritated.

Wow that is dedication! I could definitely be wrong, but I think I remember hearing about somebody that brushed so much it actually wore away their enamel and gave them gum disease because of the irritation. Maybe in this case you are too much of an overachiever :D

:) Thanks.... maybe I am an overachiever. I have had my braces on for three months and I have always taken care of them this way. Perhaps I need to lay off a little bit.

I use to have that problem too. I have a team of dentist. I was told to put a 1/4 teaspoon of clorox bleach with warm water my waterpik. At first I was real hesitate about doing this, but then realized it was no more than what is in a swimming pool. I do this once a day, usually before I go to bed at night. Not only is it good for the gums, but also kills all of the bacteria that may be lurking around that we miss. I have not had one problem since I started doing this. Also if you can't tolerate the taste of bleach, add some mint extract or your favorite flavor to the mix. Believe me you will become used to this and not turn back. Of course we all know that we don't swallow any of this...Good luck to all!

Hi. A word of caution about your Water Pick. My hygenist said to only turn it to the middle pressure - say the flow is rated 1 to 10 then stick with 5. That is because we can force food up under the gums with a higher pressure and thus break the bond between the teeth and gums. This will cause receding gums and damage...
Had Damon 3 / Smart Clips for almost 2 years

Thank you all! 8) I have been rinsing with salted water and not brushing so hard. I have only been flossing twice a day now. There seems to be a little bit of improvement. As for the bleach, thanks for the suggestion but the smell of bleach sets off my asthma severely everytime.

My gums have been irritated here and there, and I have a few problem spots. I do try to do what I can (brushing them, mouthwashes, etc.) but it doesn't help. Without the stimulation from everyday chewing (the food all gets blocked by the brackets) they're just free to do their own thing. I'm not terribly worried, I figure once everything comes off (maybe by Christmas yet! :D ) things will pretty much go back to normal, hopefully it will be the same for you 8)
