Braces First and then Invisalign

#1 Post by TheThinWhiteDuke »

I am a 22 year old graduate student considering orthodontic work. My orthodontist thinks traditional braces are the best way to go, and has quoted me 20-24 months. The idea of braces doesn't bother me so much, but the length of time in them does.

Anyways, I asked the orthodontist if I could use braces to fix my initial problems and then switch to invisalign. He said I could do it but most people get used to the braces and don't bother to.

Has anybody had experience in doing this? If so, how long did you require traditional braces and how did it affect your overall treatment time?

Thanks in advance.

Hi - I am having this - I have a small train track accross my bottom 4 teeth and a molar band on the top that has elastics on it to pull my eyeteeth into place.

Then the invisalign is estimated at 12 months.

I have VERY bad overcrowding too, so I was quite surprised at the short time estimated....

I need the trad braces first because I had 4 teeth removed and I dont think invisalign is suited to this kind of situation, so my 4 canines are being moved into place first...

That was also my intention at first - ceramics for part of the treatment, then Invisalign.

But aside from the cost (which would be double - was told I'd have to pay for 2 separate treatments in full), I'm on my day 5 in ceramics on both top and bottom and don't find them that aweful at all. I've decided to stick with them till the end, which will probably also shorten my treatment time a bit.

By the way, as far as getting several consultations - get as many as you reasonably can. I saw 5 orthodontists before making the decision. Only 2 out of 5 made sense professionally and were nice enough as people :)

I am thinking of getting off my braces and moving to Invisalign. I am 32 years old and absolutely hate the braces. How practical is this? My dentist thinks that I need to be on braces for atleast 2 years so technically I would have 8 month more on the metal. Would anyone suggest moving to Invisalign when I am so close to finishing with the normal metal? Would this push the cost of treatment up significantly?
