Another milestone has passed. Today I got out the wisdom tooth that I had been told I would have to get out to facilitate surgery. I have to say that I dreaded this far more than my upcoming surgery. I take comfort in the knowledge that the surgery will happen when I am knocked out and when I wake I will be over it and all I have to do is recover. The fact that I was going to be awake for this tooth did make me a little anxious.
I only had one to get out. Bottom left, which was fully through. I decided not to get the twighlight injection. I have to report , for anyone that still has to have this done IT WAS PAINLESS. I did not feel the jab of the injection AT ALL. He said that he would tug on my cheek, and that was all I felt. He gave me two such jabs, neither was in the slightest bit painful. My gum numbed he just told me that I would feel pressure as he worked the tooth free. That was it , within perhaps 15 minutes he was holding the tooth where I wanted....in his hand! he checked to ensure that all the tooth had come out and then put in some gauze to plug the cavity. I was to keep this in about 15 minutes.
My appointment was for 9am and I was walking out the door at 9.50am. I would urge anyone getting a tooth out to go for the first appointment of the day as I always find the waiting terrible.
My wife and I drove to a local shopping centre and I had a cappuccino and a slice of carrot cake. I did not expect a result like this. I hope that this will help others who have this to go through in the future.
My teeth were a war zone 10 months ago when I got the braces in. I had overcrowding and two of my bottom teeth were at 45 degrees to my gum. Now they are all in line and even though I was told that my teeth would get worse before the operation , they are in fact better than they were, although they are a little bit further forward. Not as much as you would notice however. I never thought that it would take so long but I have to say that the time passes VERY quickly.
So that's all folks for the moment. I have my next ortho appointment on Monday 24th April and I hope that I will now be given more details about when i can expect surgery. Happy easter to everyone and thanks for all the support that this forum gives.

Thought it was about time I updated my progress path. well, its now just 5 days over one year since I first had the braces put on. Tonight I took a photo of my teeth and compared it to a photo I took upon my return from my ortho with my braces on. I really was amazed to see just how much of a war zone my teeth were.

I have uploaded to http://www.iol.ie/~dphelan/dental.html

I will be having upper and lower surgery to correct a grade 3 underbite and I think that, if I can up load the photos you can see that it should make major difference when done. Even now my whole mouth feels different and looking at the before photo still has me amazed at the change. I would say to anyone thinking of undergoing this process to go for it because time really does fly. I really cannot believe that its now one year on. My orth wants to still rotate one bottom tooth and said that he thinks it might be ready by September or October. I will then see my surgeon for co-ordinating a date for the operation. I hope that when I put up my next up date that I will have a date and then I hope to really keep an exact record of my operation and recovery. All the best for now.

Hi Dave!

Your teeth look fantastic! You must be so pleased. I hope you get a date for your op soon.

I have to say- you did very well with the wisdom tooth. I had all four out under a general and the pain I experienced in the week following is comparable to the one I am experiencing now with the spacers- and I thought I got off lightly with the wisdoms. I can't believe you went out for cake after! Wow!

I love that you are able to make the kids feel better about their braces- it is a bonus of this experience! I am in a situation that is kind of opposite- I don't know any adults in braces so my 15 year old cousin who has just been debanded will be my mentor!

I look forward to hearing about your op as it gets closer. Take care.
Banded 22 June 2006.
Debanded 24 July 2007.
Loving it!

Have not had a lot to post until now. I had a visit to my ortho on the 24th of October and he told me that at my next visit he will take the impressions for the surgery. It came as a shock as I did not really expect to see the end of the orthodontics.......!!!!!!!
I guess this is it now. I will see him on the 22nd of November and then I hope that I will have a clear picture of the situation. It is so strange to think that its one year and four months since I got the braces. Time really goes by quickly. Will post again with more info after I get the impressions done.
Bye all

Fantastic news Dave!

You must be so excited to be nearing the end. I'll never that shock of excitement and anticipation when my ortho finally announced that my teeth were ready and that she would be taking moulds to pass onto my surgeon. It's taken a few months since my teeth were "officially" ready for my surgery date to come around but I promise you, it goes so fast.

Lots of luck on the 22nd, let us know how it goes.

It's good to hear that things are happening for you. It seems to take forever to get to the stage of being close to surgery and then it comes up really quickly. Best of luck with your approaching impressions date, and I hope you get some good news.

:x Just thought that I,d update on my ortho appointment on the 22nd November. I thought that I was getting the impressions taken. He decided that this will now be done on the 20th December?????not really sure why. He took out the arch Wire that I had in and put in what felt like steel rods. this was really strong archwire. It took a lot of pushing to get it to pass through the brackets. It did feel very sore for several days.
I hope now that I will have the impressions made on the 20th and that I will get a date for the surgery soon after that. I am anxious to have a date for several reasons....1) my own sanity 2) I have students doing final exams and want to know how 2007 will pan out 3) Simply to plan holidays etc,
So thats it for now. I hope that I will have a clearer picture later.

I go for impressions on the 19th of December ( after 21 months of braces ,, was supposed to be 12 originally :x ).. Should have been a few weeks ago but a couple of gaps re-opened after two lower springs were removed . Hopefully lower surgery early in the new year .. Surgeon is busy though so think it will be Feb . Ah well ... Best of luck at your next visit .

Just to update. Had my appiontment on friday. Thought it was going to be a joint Ortho and Surgeon but not to be. Just the Ortho who said things are looking good but perhaps another 3 months. Really felt down as now it looks as if it might be the early summer for the operation as I will have to wait until the surgeon can fit me into his dairy. This might only take a week or two.
Anyway thats the update
