I just bought one last week and I love it.
yj208, it just takes some practice. start on the lowest setting and use all the attachments until you get a feel for it. Its helpful if you bring your face as close to the sink as possible until you get the hang of it and when you need to reposition, use the "pause" button.
Here's my nightly process and it might seem a little over-kill...
I use the regular attachment first to clear most of the particles, I aim at the gumline on top/bottom then inside (where braces are not placed).. by this time, I have to refill. And then I brush with my soniccare toothbrush.
Then i go back to the waterpik with the ortho attachment to clean around brackets. when I'm done with that, for safe measure, I go around with the regular attachment to do another rinse.
I always floss so by this time, I'm ready to do a quick once around.. and then finish off w/ anti-plaque/flouride mouthwash.
In the mornings, I just do a quick brush and a quick rinse w/ the waterpik.
I hope this may have served some help. good luck!

I just looked at my box, I have the Waterpik Ultra.
What don't you like about yours?
Keep practicing, you will get better!
This is the one I currently have...

It's reservoir is definitely bigger than the ultra. I suppose that is a plus. I dunno though. Like I said, it feels real cheap and said reservoir feels like it's always getting in the way and/or gonna fall off. I've got 14 days to return it to the company for a full refund, so maybe I'll give it a few more to see if it grows on me....
I have hardly any counter space so I got the portable waterpik...plus, that one seems easier to keep your mouth closed somewhat around it and move it around your mouth. I also use it to try to keep underneath my nance (appliance on the roof of my mouth) somewhat clean.

I recently got a wp-450 to get used to it before my braces go on. It works great so far, a quick rinse after a meal gets all the stray food bits from between my teeth. I keep my lips closed while using it and have had minimal mess problems, (I just stop the stream and spit once my mouth fills with water). I can see it being an invaluable tool once I have brackets and wires to deal with as well!
