Do I have Long Face Syndrome? (pic attached)

#1 Post by vegathestar »

Hi there,

I am very confused because I have went to two orthodontist, the first orthodontist told me I have a bit of 'long chin' and told me I can get surgery to fix it but it won't be necessary because she thinks my face profile looks ok.
The second orthodontist did not say anything about my face and did not suggest surgery, instead he offers to push my overjet back. (I have 2-3mm of overjet) So I proceeded to get braces with him

This is how my face profile look like now with power chain
all pictures were taken yesterday
(very bad overjet after getting power chain, teeth can't meet at all)

i'm an asian and I have no idea why my face profile looks so weird so I would need opinions from fellow braced people here... Do you think I would look alright after braces fixed my overjet or is surgery really my only option?
I was pretty sure my teeth was fine before I got braces but powerchain seems to have pushed my lower arch further back, exaggerating my overjet. :-+

doesn't seem like lfs, but there is no front shot so it's hard to make an honest non-doctor assessment lol. there are some posters with a good eye for profiles at jawsurgeryforums (in my signature). i don't see any jaw issues that could be corrected with surgery. you have a strong profile and solid ramus as far as i can tell. i do some spacing in your lower teeth, has your ortho addressed that yet? or is that just the resolution of the photos?

if you do end up getting surgery, and i don't know why because i can't see anything (but no doctors here, get a consult), realize that your braces treatment will likely make you look worse and exaggerate your bite in order for the surgery to happen. teeth have to be in a certain way to manipulate the jaw and align the bite, and pre-surgery braces treatment for me was like reverse braces.

I don't understand what you think is wrong with your profile.

oh thanks! I will check out jawsurgeryforums and ask for opinions!
yes i do have a spacing in my lower teeth (caused by hereditary absence of lower incisors and I only have 12 teeth on bottom arch), and 1 extraction gap on my upper arch. my orthodontist is trying to close up the gap but currently from how I see, my overjet looks pretty bad and my overbite might be exaggerated with braces because the power chain is pushing my lower arch in :-+

really thank you so much! after what you have just said, I figured I don't really need the surgery. maybe I only need to give more time for braces to fix everything

I can't quite point a finger at what is wrong with my profile but I know there is something weird about my profile face! something got to do with the angle of my teeth maybe? i'm not sure if its just overjet or combination of overjet AND overbite, but my lower lip seems to protrude out a bit too much :yuck: my philtrum (the area between the nose and upper lip) is also kind of protruding out. i'm not sure what is causing this, i always thought i have excess mandibular

I wondered if that was the issue. Yes, your lips are prominent on your profile but imo not in an ugly way. If your teeth were pulled back a bit I imagine that would lessen the prominence of the lips but I'm no expert.

Omg thank you  i'm so relieved to hear that!
While it doesn't affect my frontal view, I was very insecure about my face profile! especially when i'm caught on candid photos, I seem to look like a horse most of the time without me knowing. Sigh. I hope braces would help me with that, shall talk to my orthodontist about it. Thanks :rose:

You don't have the earmarks of vertical maxillary excess (long face syndrome) which are lip incompetence, gummy smile, excessive tooth display at rest, retruded chin, etc. Your profile looks good though.

Aw thanks! :-* :flowerbloom: actually my lips are a bit of protruding though. but i'm crossing my fingers that my lower face profile would go in a little bit more after my braces are taken off

It really is normal, once you get the braces off they'll protrude less. Keep in mind too as you age your upper lip will flatten/thin so they'll protrude even less, it's youthful and attractive the way they look now.

You look fine to me. Surgery is not something to be taken lightly.

I dont really see a problem with your facial profile. It seems pretty well balanced to me. There certainly is nothing wrong with having full lips! :D
